Aberystwyth Crematorium supports local organisations
Six local charities and organisations have been given donations totalling more than £6,000 by Aberystwyth Crematorium is, which it raised as part of its metal recycling scheme.
With the consent of families, metals recovered during cremation are recycled and any money raised at each of the 34 crematoria and cemeteries nationwide operated by Westerleigh Group is used to support local worthy causes.
Aberystwyth Crematorium has given £2,000 to the RNLI, £1,000 to Gorwelion Resource Centre, and £815 each to four food banks, in Aberystwyth, Lampeter, Newtown and Gwynedd.
Rachel Harrison, site manager at the crematorium, said: “All these organisations do such incredible work to make a positive difference to the lives of local people who are in need of support and help.”
Aberystwyth Lifeboat station was established in 1861 to serve Cardigan Bay which has been a popular holiday destination, and it was the first RNLI station ever to have an inshore lifeboat.
Rachel said: “It’s been a particularly busy year for the local RNLI, with more people having staycations because of the pandemic.”
The impact of the coronavirus had a strong influence on which charities the crematorium chose to support this year through its recycling scheme.
Rachel said: “Gorwelion Resource Centre is run by the Hywel Dda University Health Board and provides a range of mental health services.
“We chose this because we know that there has been a huge increase in the number of people suffering with mental health difficulties because of the lockdown restrictions this year.
“We chose to give money to four local food banks, too, because we know that Covid-19 has had a huge impact on the finances of so many families, and more people are needing the vital support provided by foodbanks than ever before.
“It’s an honour to be able to provide these local organisations with some financial support, especially during these particularly challenging times.
“We wanted to support a number of different worthy causes to reflect the fact that our crematorium serves such a wide area, covering Ceredigion, Powys, Gwynedd and Carmarthenshire.”
